NEW PIG ON THE BLOCK

Hazlehead Hall’s resident farmer, William Booth, is delighted to announce the imminent arrival of two litters of pedigree Tamworth piglets. The piglets were born early March and are due to arrive at Hazlehead Hall when they have been weaned at the end of May.

The Tamworth’s have been bred by expert pig rearer Jonathan Charlesworth at Broad Close Farm, just up the road, in Silkstone. As Jonathan explains, “The Tamworth pig is the aristocrat of the pig world commanding attention with its large frame, long legs, pricked up ears and distinctive ginger colour. It is more akin to a wild boar in appearance than your standard domestic pink pig. It is a unique, individual and boisterous character that you can’t help but notice. They are a real pleasure to breed and rear.”

Jonathan continues, “The piglets are currently living free-range in the beautiful woodland at Broad Close Farm. They are making the most of it, rooting in the earth and generally creating havoc. Local ramblers walking past the woods stand watching them running riot for hours.”   William Booth said, “The Tamworth pig is a fantastic creature, we are confident that Hazlehead’s existing Gloucester Old Spots will be delighted to see them. No doubt they’ll all be frisking about in the top field near the shop this summer. They will be a joy to have at the farm. However we’re not quite sure how the free range barbary ducks and hens are going to take having a new pig on the bloc

BBC film for Tikkabilla to be shown on CBEEBIES (children's television) later in the year.

The pictures below show local stars, Lucy and Charlie, being filmed by the chicken house. The day was not the best day Yorkshire had had - it was the first day of rain following a gloriously hot spell - but that's showbiz, and filming had to go on!

The cameraman (fresh from filming 'Wish You were here')

The opening shot - Uncle Bill, Lucy and Charlie approach.

The filming continues despite the poor weather (the schedule must be met!). The cameraman was used to somewhat warmer climes. He should have been here yesterday!! The geese in the next field wanted to nosey in on the action. It was quiet a challenge to get the chickens to emerge from the house - what is they say? "never act with children or animals". After some time and great persuasion something appeared. It was the rabbit that shares the accommodation with the hens...

The rabbit hogs the camera - maybe he thought it was a remake of Watership Down. Finally the arrival of the hens.... slightly past their cue!! Great direction and that all important 'low level shot'. Lucy being filmed delivering the introduction. Or as we say in the business her 'peace to camera'. Time for a well earned break... then it will be back to work!

Credits: Lucy was played by Lucy. Charlie was  played by Charlie.  Rabbit and hens played by various local Thespians.... Camera operated by Andy. Research by Anna. Directed by Pauline.

Breaking News. Hazlehead Hall Farm Shop wins prestigious award from Yorkshire Agricultural Society. Story coming shortly.
